Paywall  /  What your buyer sees

What your buyer sees

You configure the paywall from your side — this page shows the journey from the buyer's side, step by step, and how each of your settings shapes it. Useful for checking your setup, and for answering buyer questions confidently.

The journey, step by step

1

The store — prices adapted to where they are

Your pricing page shows each plan's card. For Net (+ VAT) products, EU/UK visitors see the price with their own country's VAT already included (EU and UK law requires consumers to see final prices). Visitors outside your sales region (at widest: EU + UK) can browse the store, but checkout blocks the purchase — see the block messages below. Gross products look the same to everyone. Sale prices show the old price struck through, with an optional countdown.
2

The consent screen — “A few quick agreements”

If your app sells in the EU or the UK, buyers first see a short screen with the legally required checkboxes (details below). One click on “Continue to payment →” and they're through.
3

The payment form

Card details plus a billing address. Depending on your audience setting, a VAT-number field is hidden, optional, or required. The tax line updates live as they type — a business buyer entering a valid VAT number sees the tax drop to 0% (reverse charge) on the spot. There's also a “Have a discount code?” link if you run promotions.
4

Done — access is instant

Payment succeeds, access is granted immediately, your app's success screen shows, and the receipt or invoice arrives by email (depending on your invoicing choice).

The consent screen, in detail

The screen is titled “A few quick agreements” and explains it's required by consumer law across the EU and the UK. What appears on it:

CheckboxRequired?Where you control it
Terms of Service agreementYes — always onYour Terms URL (App Settings, or a paywall-only override)
“I waive my 14-day right of withdrawal” (digital products — EU & UK consumer law)Yes — always onAutomatic — protects you from refund-after-use claims
Privacy Policy confirmationYes, when enabledYour Privacy Policy URL
Marketing consent (“I'd like to receive product updates…”)Never — always optional by lawPaywall → consent settings
Up to two custom checkboxes of your ownYour choice per checkboxPaywall → consent settings — write any text, mark “Required to purchase” or not

Every text can be customised per language — add languages with “+ Add language” and buyers see the version matching their locale. You can use {{app_name}} and {{privacy_policy_url}} inside the texts and they fill in automatically.

Don't skip the URLs. If the paywall is on but your Privacy Policy or Terms links are empty, the dashboard shows a warning — consumer law across the EU and the UK requires buyers to see them before purchase. Set them in App Settings (or override just for the paywall in the consent settings).

When a buyer can’t buy — what they’re told

Your Tax Setup protects you by refusing sales you aren't registered for. The buyer is never charged first — they get a clear message on the payment form. The exact wording, per situation:

SituationThe buyer reads
Your app sells only in your country, buyer is abroad“Sorry — this product is only available in {your country}.”
You sell EU-only, buyer is outside the EU“Sorry — this product is currently only available in the European Union.”
Buyer is in the UK and you're not UK-VAT-registered (any reach, incl. EU + UK)“Sorry — this product isn't available in the United Kingdom yet.”
You sell EU + UK, buyer is outside both“Sorry — this product is only available in the European Union and the United Kingdom.”
You hit your €10k / €100k cap (with blocking on)“This item isn't available for purchase in your country right now. Please contact the seller.”
A company tries to buy with a VAT number, but you haven't enabled VAT-EU“Business purchases aren't available here yet. To buy as an individual, remove the VAT number.”
You sell to businesses only, buyer has no VAT number“This product is sold to businesses — enter your company's VAT number to continue.”
You haven't finished Tax Setup at all“Purchases aren't available just yet — the seller is still setting up their store. Please check back soon.”

While the buyer is still typing their address, some cases already show a gentle amber hint (for example suggesting a business buyer add their VAT number). The firm stop happens when they press Pay — never after the money moved.

Seeing one of these messages unexpectedly? Each one maps to a single switch: country blocks → your reach in Tax Setup or the app's “Sell only to…” toggle; the threshold message → your €10k/€100k path; the business messages → the VAT-EU toggle and your audience choice.
